DRAG A STAR 1.0 - The Social Media From Outer Space from HKUST-NIE Social Media Lab

Abstract

"Drag A Star" is an interactive installation artwork to give audience an immersive feeling to remember the myth of making wishes upon a shooting star and to learn the recent scientific understanding about the meteorites. This to imagine that human being would have the future possibilities to catch a star physically and write the messages of a wish on it, or even realize someone's wish after reading the wishes of others. To achieve these experiences and immersive feelings, the piece are created based on latest technologies on interactive display, screen smart-device interactions, mobile applications, and web-based messaging system. Over these technologies, extensive scientific, artistic and design efforts are integrated precisely to create these immersive and beautiful feelings and cyber-physical interactions with the shooting stars and eventually convey to the visitors the various level of artistic statements.

“Drag A Star 2.0” is an interactive installation artwork which provides an immersive interactive star field experience. Audience engage this interactive piece with their smart phone application. With the smart phone, audience able to generate their own unique design star and send it to the star field. Audience could even embed their star with a wish, just like the old myth of wishing upon a shooting star. Stars that being generated are stored in the web server database, it is then being retrieved and visually display as a star in the night sky. Thus, every star tells a story. Audience could catch the shooting star by just performing a simple dragging gesture and then able to read at others wishes, or even reply to the wishes. This art piece is a combination of different technologies which involve projection mapping technique display, mobile application, web-based messaging system and web server database. Every action by the users are stored in the web server database and all these actions would determine the visual component of the star field. The visual engagement is due to the user interaction engagement. It is an interactive art piece which greatly involve audience engagement and thus connect the audience to the art piece both physically and digitally.

“Drag A Star 3.0” is site-specific interactive art which setup in a café umbrella context. Audiences were meant to sit down and relax under the umbrella while interacting with this piece. With their smart phone, audience able to generate their own unique design star and send it to the star field.
